Appellation:

Alsace

Locality:

Various locations around Ribeauvillé: Colmarer Weg, Ellenweier, Mittlerer Forst...

Type of soil:

The Louis SIPP parcels of land are situated in the geological fracture zone of Ribeauvillé. They constitute a territory which is geologically highly fragmented. They are above areas with hard chalk, clay and marl from the Liassic and Triassic periods, sandstone clay, and calcareous, chalky conglomerates from the Oligocene period. The area is also characterized by silt-laden deposits, originally loessial, and by glacis and sandy alluvium in the valley and on the plain. Our plots growing RIESLING are situated in the sandy and stony alluvial deposits of the Colmarer Weg plain and on slopes composed of marl and chalk.

Certified organic grapes:

Started in 2005, our conversion to organic production took a concrete form three years later in 2008 with the ECOCERT certification. Since 2012, all the cellar operations are also covered by the European specification so that we can now speak about organic wines.

Wine character:

The nose is very expressive with grapefruit and tropical fruits flavors. Pure and fine expression of the Riesling. A dry Riesling with the freshness and the tension typical from the vintage 2021, with a nice balance and a good length.

Tips for consuming:

May be served with all dishes which require a dry white wine: crustaceans, shellfish, fish (grilled or served in sauce), white meat, and of course sauerkraut.
This Riesling can be aged, however it is now ready for drinking.

The 2021 vintage :

The 2021 vintage got off to a good start, with a rather cold winter and a few snowy episodes with no impact on the sleeping vines. A first alert came in April when the thermometer flirted with negative temperatures and frost threatened. Although our vines suffered less than in most other French wine-growing regions, 10 to 20% of the buds froze, reducing the production potential of certain plots in the spring.

Starting quickly from the end of April, the vegetative development was marked by extreme climatic conditions and long and frequent periods of rain in May, June and especially July, periods during which it was very difficult to intervene in our vines and to apply preventive treatments for cryptogamic diseases. According to our elders, mildew had never found such favorable ground for its development, causing heavy losses on certain grape varieties, in the Pinot family in particular, especially in certain sectors of the vineyard.

Initiated on September 21, with a tight but motivated team, the harvest took place under excellent weather conditions and a particularly brilliant Indian summer.

We undertook meticulous harvesting work, intended to select only the most beautiful grapes. While allowing the grapes to reach full maturity, it was possible to preserve all their freshness. And at the end of the harvest, in mid-October, we were even gratified by a harvest of Late Harvest in our plots of Gewurztraminer Grand Cru Osterberg!
